D.C. Dining
posted on Jan 30 2005

DCWashington D.C. is one of my favorite cities to visit… seriously.

Politics. Media. Scandal. Gossip. Those hours spent sitting on the steps of the Lincoln memorial at sunset.

D.C. has it all.

Quite a few people from the District read the blog, so this post is for them. They’ve probably eaten at most of the places, but here they are, just in case they missed any:

- D.C. dining on a dime

- Quick Eats in DC

- DCist ‘Food & Drink’

- Tabaq Bistro

Best of 2005: Top Ten Events in My Life

#8 - Graduate School Highs & Lows - My journey to graduate school began in July of 2003 with hopes that it would end by August 2004. After MC asked me to come on as a full-time staffer, that date was pushed back to December 2005. But, as many of you have recently come to find out, I never recieved 3 emails I was supposed to ave recieved regarding my Comprehensive Exams (which are necessary for us Corp. Communication folks to graduate). Therefore… I have to wait until March of this year to take those comps… then I’ll be done.

But, once again, I know I’ll never regret the late night term papers and peeling through Supreme Court documents. This degree, when it’s done (even though it technically has been since July 2005) will be something I know that I worked to obtain

Why no advertising?
posted on Jan 29 2005

A few folks have asked recently: “Why aren’t you running ads on your blog?

Many reasons. One, it wouldn’t be worth it. Any of you marketing majors who know about CPMs know that 1.5 is the average. For all you other folks… that means that most ads earn about $1.50 for each 1,000 people who view them. HOWEVER, at JND we average around 5.0… which is unheard of [Landon smiles... has a moment of reflection for his marketing genius].

The second reason I choose not to advertise here: Why? Why add one more advertisement to your day? This is supposed to be a place where you can some for information and entertainment.

However, if someone or some business would like to sponsor my upcomming trip to Europe, I’ll be more than happy to drop your name over and over again for a month.

Things I've Learned: Thanksgiving Round-Up
posted on Jan 26 2005

Things I’ve learned over the last few days:
badracket

  • Getting beat at video games by an 8-year-old is extremely frustrating.
  • RENT‘ is terrible. You’d be better to spend $50 for a ticket on Broadway than to spend a dime on the movie.
  • 8-year-olds will repeat anything you say, and look for any opportunity to use what they’ve heard. (”dang” “crap” “sucks”… etc.)
  • This world is full of morons… and most of them can be found at Wal-Mart at 5:00 AM the morning after Thanksgiving. [video 1 - video 2]
  • Chicks dig purple “violet” Polo shirts. Whether or not they dig me remains to be seen… especially if I keep using the word “dig.”
  • Badminton is extremely underated, and quite the vengeance tool for the 8-year-old who just beat you at video games and repeated all the “dirty words” you said while losing.

  • My Favorite Christmas Movies: #3 - Christmas Vacation
    posted on Jan 23 2005

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation - I think this, and will continue to be, the funniest Chirstmas movie ever made. I have yet to meet someone who dislikes this holiday classic. “Are you serious Clark?” Yes, I am.

Ok, so maybe its not that bad. But there was something missing last night.

    Laguna Beach.

I know, I know… the show will be back in the Spring. Plus, we’ll get to enjoy LC’s drama-fileld life in ‘The Hills.’

But let’s all keep in mind that Laguna Beach will be with an entire new cast, and LC’s Hills will be without all the gang from Laguna Beach Season 1 and 2.

I’m talking way too much about this, aren’t I?

    Ok, I’m done… for today.

    Things I've Been Addicted To
    posted on Jan 21 2005

Just a few things that captivated me to an almost-obsessive extent. Maybe not obsessive… but at one point I really, really liked them.

  • NASCAR - I grew up in Alabama, always thought NASCAR was for rednecks and… well, rednecks. But it took a visit to Talladega at the age of 20 to get me hooked. I still keep up with it, but I only care about Junior.
  • Smoothies - During my first year of grad school I not only lived 11 different places in 12 months, I also learned how to live on $20 a week for food alone. Ice, bananas, strawberries, and a little bit of “Landon’s special energy powder” can make a little money go far, and fill your stomach up to 5 times a day. Yes, five times a day. Most days 2, or 3… but sometimes the appeal of obliterated fruit mixed with ice is just too much to say no to.
  • Facebook - Anyone who’s gotten on Facebook has experienced the “Facebook Addiction” to a certain extent. Mine was short-lived, although I do check it throughout the day… but no obsessively.
  • The Drudge Report - News, before it happens. Matt Drudge’s website gets more than 10,000,000 hits per day and Drudge is always one step ahead of the curve when it comes to breaking news and insider information. I still check it multiple times a day, but not the 50-60 times per day as was the case during the 2005 Election.
  • Instant Messaging - This is definitely a high school era obsession, but an obsession nonetheless. Hours upon hours of meaningless conversasion gossip, flirting with JV Cheerleaders and Lord knows what else. I shudder at the though of extended time on AIM now-a-days as my work requires my attention when logging onto the world wide web. Work… heh.

    I Luv NY
If you’ve never seen ths site, you’re in for a treat.

Overhheard in New York is a collection of random quotes that have been (you got it) overheard by others in New York City.

    A couple of samples:

  • Guy #1: So I’m trying to set Anthony up with this girl.
Guy #2: Wait a minute, I thought Anthony was gay.
Guy #1: Everybody does, but he’s not. He just has a slight lisp.
  • Guy #1: What time is it?
    Guy #2: One o’clock.
Guy #1: What? How long has it been one?
Guy #2: Less than a minute?
  • Guy #1: Do you have a light?
Guy #2: I don’t think you should smoke, this is a cancer walk.
Guy #1: Yes, but it’s not for lung cancer.
  • Girl #1: She wouldn’t even take his name?
Girl #2: And she even refused to hyphenate? That’s ridiculous.

    Thumbs Up
I appreciate the positive emails/comments/phone calls over the last few days. Snyder and Josh Kyle were kind enough to take time out of their busy UVA and Ole Miss schedules to comment about the site.

    What can you do now?

Tell me what you like, tell me what you don’t like.

While this is my blog, and while I have fun posting on a (big word) plethora of items… I like to hear what you have to say.

Feel free to comment below, or you can just shoot me an email. No emails will be posted without your consent.

I was late for a night of sushi, so I had to listen to the radio for the end of the Alabama-LSU game Saturday night.

    Kiss

I heard about the “man kiss” which CBS so graciously televised. I was finally sent a picture of said picture today.

The kiss in question came after Jamarcus Russell’s touchdown pass in overtime. The touchdown gave LSU a 16-13 victory over the Crimson Tide.

Please notice the two gentlemen (in purple… oddly enough) in the center of this picture.

I’ve been to some exciting games… but I have yet to celebrate like this.

So I’m channel surfing last night, and I come accross MTV to find… ‘Laguna Beach.’

Reruns, of course, but Wednesday was a rough day… so this surprise was much appreciated.

No other purpose to this post, except getting excited - anticipating Season 3.

One things for sure about The O.C.… you are either addicted to it, or you couldn’t care less about it.

However, the only thing better than the show, is the music surrounding the show.

I’ve dug up a site that will serve as the cure for your music ills.

Search eposide-by-epsiode for all the songs you’ve heard from Season 1, Season 2, and Season 3.

Almost all of the songs can be purchased individually on iTunes. Some of them actally come in official ‘O.C. Soundtracks.’

I’ve actually purhased a couple, and whether you like the show are not, the music is dang good.

    Enjoy.

    Narnia

Just got back from seeing ‘Narnia.’

One of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. Could C.S. have layed the Christian overtones on a little thicker?

    - Aslan taking the place of Peter.
    - The White Witch on the prowl for “prophicied children.” (Hello Harod!)
    - Aslans “It is finished” line at the end.

    Great. Wonderful. (Insert compliment here).

    Great movie.

    'Grey's Anatomy' - An Overview
    posted on Jan 7 2005

Sorry, but I’m not that into Grey’s Anatomy. I’ve got my favorite shows… and G.A. just doesn’t do much for me. It’s all: “Oh my gosh, the guy from ‘Can’t Buy Me Love‘ doesn’t like the woman with the slight lisp from ‘Old School!’

    Bor-ing.

The only thing I enjoy is the panoramic camera shots of Seattle during the episodes, but even that isn’t enough to keep me around.

However, if you’re interested in hopping into the show mid-season, TVgasm has a nice overview of Grey’s Anatomy.

    Enjoy.
