Things I've Been Addicted To
Jan 21 2005

Just a few things that captivated me to an almost-obsessive extent. Maybe not obsessive… but at one point I really, really liked them.

  • NASCAR – I grew up in Alabama, always thought NASCAR was for rednecks and… well, rednecks. But it took a visit to Talladega at the age of 20 to get me hooked. I still keep up with it, but I only care about Junior.
  • Smoothies – During my first year of grad school I not only lived 11 different places in 12 months, I also learned how to live on $20 a week for food alone. Ice, bananas, strawberries, and a little bit of “Landon’s special energy powder” can make a little money go far, and fill your stomach up to 5 times a day. Yes, five times a day. Most days 2, or 3… but sometimes the appeal of obliterated fruit mixed with ice is just too much to say no to.
  • Facebook – Anyone who’s gotten on Facebook has experienced the “Facebook Addiction” to a certain extent. Mine was short-lived, although I do check it throughout the day… but no obsessively.
  • The Drudge Report – News, before it happens. Matt Drudge’s website gets more than 10,000,000 hits per day and Drudge is always one step ahead of the curve when it comes to breaking news and insider information. I still check it multiple times a day, but not the 50-60 times per day as was the case during the 2005 Election.
  • Instant Messaging – This is definitely a high school era obsession, but an obsession nonetheless. Hours upon hours of meaningless conversasion gossip, flirting with JV Cheerleaders and Lord knows what else. I shudder at the though of extended time on AIM now-a-days as my work requires my attention when logging onto the world wide web. Work… heh.
