This Thing They Call ‘Disciple Now’
Feb 3 2006

If anyone needs me this weekend, I’ll be locked up in a house full of rowdy, inquisitive, hormone-driven, XBox-playing, 10th grade boys in this Christian slumber party we Baptists refer to as: Disciple Now

We should have a grand-ole time eating junk food, drinking caffeinated drinks after midnight, and learning the fruit of the spirit. (I think I’m a pear… or an orange).

All joking aside, Disciple Now weekends are some of my favorite memories from high school.

I will never forget our Senior Year DN Weekend. Picture this:

The fearless Walker High School Vikings (us) are 8-2 in 5A Football, ready to get an “easy win” in the First Round of the Playoffs against a team named “Coffee.”

    Yes… Coffee High School.

Long-story-short… we lost… by one point… on a two-point-conversion… in overtime… after our kicker had missed 3 field-goals and an extra point on the night. Ouch.

So, after the football game we find ourselves thrown into the DN Weekend with heavy… heavy hearts. Among the bunch:

    Chris Waldrop (Starting Quarterback)
    Nick Hendrickson (Starting Linebacker)
    Sam Watts (Starting Linebacker)
    John Hataway (Fearless Wide Reciever)
    Katy Gambrell (Cheerleader)
    Lindsey Cunningham (Cheerleader)
    Haley Howellno relation (Cheerleader)
Bethany Burns (Long-time girlfriend of starting QB Chris Waldrop)
Matt Pittman (Long-time boyfriend of Cheerleader Haley Howell)
…and myself (Starting Offensive Lineman… and the most feared Punt-Blocker in North Alabama. Ask me later)

So, as you can see, football was kinda a big deal to almost everyone in the room. Except for Matt… who kept reminding us that we lost. Thanks buddy.

Highlights:

We broke the Chandelor’s bunk bed… and a coffee table (how ironic) to which they never noticed… until I told them on the Ski Trip this January.

We created video game characters of ourselves playing football… in order to get over the fact hat none of us would ever play again.

We gathered round the TV to watch Auburn and LSU play. (To which, during the game, our Disciple Now leader propted her feet up in my lap!!! I still swear she was hitting on me. Seeing as how I had a letterman jacket and everything… that’s understandable.)

I think the thing most interesting about the weekend: We had 5 different Bible study times… and I can’t remember one thing we talked about.

I felt kinda bad about this when recalling the infamous weekend. But then I realize, that’s kinda what Christian brotherhood and sisterhood is all about.

    Forming lasting relationships.
    Building trust through shared experiences.
Spreading shaving cream on your friends face while they are fast asleep.

So, I guess what I took home from that last Disciple Now Weekend was an improved friendship and gained trust amongst a group of believers. And I think God likes that.

Pray for me this weekend. Lord knows I’ll be praying for you.

You crazy sinners, you.

Good story. Reminds me of all the drama that was soon to follow. Also, stop telling my mother I’m going to get fired! She gets paranoid easily. Thanks.
