Making the Magnolia State Proud
Jul 27 2007

SEC Football Media Days are here.

A time for the University of Alabama to act like they are better than they will prove to be.
A time for Auburn to act like they are worse than they will prove to be.
A time for Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom to once again tease of the first winning season in Starkville since 2000.

Or… maybe he’ll make some superawesome comments such as this:

Croom told reporters earlier this morning that he felt pressure heading into the year, but not the kind everyone talks about.

“I do feel pressure,” he said. “The same pressure I felt in the ninth grade when Tuscaloosa Junior High played Eastwood.”

    [....]

“What’s the worst they can do to me, fire me?” Croom said. “If that’s the worst thing that would happen to me in my life, I’ve got it made.”

So basically, coaching Mississippi State carries both the pressure and the prestige of leading a school bus full of 13-year-old boys to a Tuesday night flag football game in Birmingham? That’s enough to make any MSU fan a little embarrassed. It might even make your face turn maroon.

I mean, he has a point. He’s a big time coach at a big time school Mississippi State. An SEC school, for crying out loud. He’s managed to muster a 9-25 record in his 3 years at State. Your coaching career can only go up from here.

Then again, there are those teams who value that type of commitment to excellence in losses.

Terrible State Joke told this morning by my boss:

Word out of starkville this morning is that Sylvester Croom has lost his job. When asked for a reason, the athletic director mentioned that he wanted to hire Michael Vick as head coach since he knows how to get the ‘fight’ out in bulldogs.

He has called all of his business friends all morning telling them this joke. I’ve heard it 10 times. It wasn’t funny the first time.
