It’s a lesser-known fact that a large portion of the readers of this blog are graduates and fans of Mississippi State University.
I give State a hard time on this blog… though I think I should restate my true feelings: I think it’s a super institution of higher learning. I think it’s full of quality individuals. I think the student life and campus atmosphere is something that most universities would love to have.
Having worked in college admissions for 2 years with Mississippi College, our recruiters seem to have a special bond with recruiters from State. When our admissions counselors returned from long road trips, we’d spend half the day discussing the fun that the MC/State recruiters had with one another. Heck, we even carpooled to events a couple times. P.K. Thomas… Nathan Moore… good lord, just take a look at this list. If these people are the face of Mississippi State, then you know something has got to be right.
However, State fans… your football team sucks… they have for the last 6 years… and everyone loves making fun of you telling us (every year) that this is going to be the year. We love hearing about Croom’s “master plan”, yet we’re left without answers whenever we question why that master plan involves 3 embarrassing seasons in-a-row… one of which you lost to a Division II opponent (the mighty Maine Black Bears).
That’s why I’m proposing the 2007 Maroon Bet. What is The Maroon Bet you might ask? Well I’ll tell you.
The Maroon Bet:
If the Mississippi State Bulldogs football team posts a winning record in the 2007 football season, I - Landon Howell - will agree to the following:
-
1) Dedicate one full week to Mississippi State on this blog. This will entail changing the colors from blue to maroon as well as dedicating 1 post per day to “fun facts” about State and it’s glorious history and traditions.
2) Taking a 1-month absence from any anti-State blog posts. Yes… During the month of January 2008, I will agree not to post one joke, jab, or negative comment about the maroon nation (but you guys should be kicking-butt in basketball during that time, so it won’t matter anyway).
…and this last one is the kicker…
-
3) Every reader of this blog who went to Mississippi State will receive one free blog posting totaling no more than 500 words in which to detail their love, admiration, stories, traditions, passion, etc. surrounding Mississippi State.
Why am I doing this? Because it gives you folks even more incentive to cheer on your dogs dawgs to their first winning season since Bill Clinton was President.
So… let the football season be filled with hope that we may see the Bulldogs post W’s in Starkvegas once more. It would be an interesting day on the blog should this come to fruition.
(PS - If you’re needing some new computer wallpaper… here’s a REALLY big photo of P.K.)
No comments, yet...
1:57 pm on Aug 8 2007The fact that I got not one…but two…name drops in this most interesting of posts is an honor. Does this bet count if the Bullies go 6-6 and to the Independence Bowl?
That’s an excellent question Mr. Thomas. In honor of Bonds’ record breaking HR last night, I will enact a baseball rule: tie goes to the runner.
So yes… you go 6-6, I’ll consider it a “winning season”.
I heard on Jox that State was firing Crooms………………………….. And hiring Mike Vick, he can get the dogs to fight!!!!!!
so you never responded to the proposed changing to the terms of the bet. does that mean you don’t accept, landon?
Tie goes to the runner = yes… a 6-6 season means that you win the bet.
can anyone say 3-9. i was in MS a few weeks ago, and a MSU fan swore they’d win 8 or 9 games this year.
Losses: LSU, Tennessee, Auburn, Arkansas, Alabama, West Virginia, South Carolina, Kentucky, and maybe Ole Miss
Over 50% Chance to Win: UAB, Gardner-Webb, at Tulane.
So, to get to 6-6, MSU has to get the three “percentage” wins. Additionally, they need Ole Miss and Kentucky.
Therefore, the real question is: WHO IS GETTING CROOMED THIS YEAR?
Croom knocks off Florida–bam, Zook gone.
Croom knocks off Bama–Shula outta there
Croom escapes UAB–Watson Brown opts for Tennessee Tech
First game of the season–Les Miles will get Croomed. This is the beginning of the end for “The Hat.”

let’s spice this bet up a little bit if you don’t mind…
1) you’ll dedicate 10 days of true bulldog pride to your site not 7.
2) in addition to the free blog postings you are so graciously handing out. in those 10 days, you have an official State correspondent that makes guest appearances on your blog with articles specifically relating to state (athletics, education, hot chicks - whatever).
3) you personally dedicate 1 blog entry to your beloved alma mater. but this one will be specifically focused on some of not so finer things associated with mc. for example, you could comment on this or this or this or this.
agree to that and you’ve got yourself a deal, partner.
