Winter Wonder(What The Heck Were We Thinking)land
Dec 3 2007

Well… we had a ourselves quite an adventure over the weekend. We decided to take Saturday afternoon to head 2 hours east to the little town of Leavenworth, which prides itself on the fact that everything (yes everything) within said town is modeled after a centuries past Bavarian village.

However, at Christmastime the village goes all out, decking the town with lights, hosting festivals with live instrumentalists playing Christmas song whilst the the blacksmith’s son sleds with the baker’s daughter and town residents welcome you with open arms and open hearts.

Sounds like a fun day, right? Well… that’s before the snow started.

What began as a winter wonderland quickly turned into a winter storm. Unbeknownst to us, Seattle was receiving a light dusting of snow from clouds which would soon drop 8-12 inches on the roads we were about to travel home on. What should have been a 2 hour trip home became a 5 hour journey which required us to pull over twice to attach my snow chains to the tires. DId I mention my windshield wiper broke?

When we emerged from the wilderness, we found a Mexican restaurant and ate our weight in chips and salsa. After all, isn’t that what Christmas is truly about? Gold… Frankincense… and Francisco.

Highlights:

    - Temperature: 15 degrees
    - We passed a guy from Texas who was going 10 miles per hour.
    - 90% of our trip was either going up or coming down a mountain.
    - Our snow chains will break if used at speeds over 30 miles per our. So guess how fast we had to drive?
    - My windshield wiper broke… 7 times, so I looked through Chelsea’s side of the window for an hour.
    - They shut down the interstate just after our passing.

Video:
This video shows our giddy, tickle-fight- esque moments of light snow just prior to our trip home.

This video shows 3 inches of solid ice between our tires and the road, traveling at a blazing 25 miles per hour.

Just to get a better idea, below you’ll see a photo of the back of my car just 30 minutes into our trip home, the next photo is just after we hit the winter storm. You can imagine what the rest of the SUV looked like.

you left out a particular highlight:
as you were replacing the windshield wiper for the 5th time, the interstate snowblower passed by and COVERED you.
