Motivation To Preach The Gospel
posted on Jul 30 2008

Via The Resurgence:

This is the list of top ranking “Religion and Spirituality” podcasts on iTunes right now. This is the ‘Spirituality’ America is consuming the most… To all the pastors and christians out there. Please, please, please tell people about Jesus. Tell them that they are sinners in need of a savior. Tell them that he is a good and forgiving God. Warn them about Hell, and paint a beautiful image of what Heaven will be like. Inspire them to Love Jesus.

Orator In Chief

Can’t believe the New York Times’ editor let this go to print. Maybe there is hope (no pun intended) afterall.

Article: Be Afraid. Please.

“Don’t the American people get a chance to weigh in on this in November? Maybe they’ll decide it’s more important to have John McCain as commander in chief than Barack Obama as orator in chief.”

No Dead Zone? Thanks Global Warming!
posted on Jul 28 2008

So… if global warming causes hurricanes, and hurricanes give life, isn’t global warming kinda good?

I’m confused, Al. I need a study guide.

Hurricane Dolly may have shrunk Gulf ‘dead zone’

The oxygen-starved “dead zone” that forms every summer in the Gulf of Mexico is a bit smaller than predicted this year because Hurricane Dolly stirred up the water, a scientist reported Monday.

There is too little oxygen to support sea life for about 8,000 square miles — just under the record of 8,006 square miles recorded in 2001, said Nancy Rabalais, head of the head of the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium.

Conversation of the Week: Chocolatte
posted on Jul 28 2008

A conversation we witnessed the other day in Starbucks.
Ak.ward.

Starbucks teenage drink-maker: “Her’re your drink, sir.”
Senior citizen customer guy: “Excuse me, but you’ve got a glob of chocolate on your face.”
Starbucks teenage drink-maker: [Wipes his face. Looks down at his chocolate-less hand. Gives confused look to senior citizen.]
Senior citizen customer guy: “Right there.” [Pointing to the teenagers cheek.]
Starbucks teenage drink-maker: [Wipes again. Looks up at the senior citizen.]

    “Actually, it’s just my mole.”

We had serious business to tend to around these parts over the weekend. “Serious business” is code for watching Step Brothers on Saturday, late night dinner at The Cheesecake Factory.

That said, the “slow page loading” on the blog is persisting and I am digging to find out why. I appreciate your patience.

    My South
    posted on Jul 22 2008

The following in a excerpt from My South which was written by Robert St. John, executive chef and owner of the Purple Parrot Cafe, Crescent City Grill and Mahogany Bar of Hattiesburg, MS.

My South is full of honest, hard-working people.

My South is colorblind. In my South, we don’t put a premium on pigment. No one cares whether you are black, white, red or green with orange polka dots.

My South is the birthplace of blues and jazz, and rock-and-roll. It has banjo pickers and fiddle players, but it also has B.B. King, Muddy Waters, the Allman Brothers, Emmylou Harris and Elvis.

      My South is hot.

My South smells of newly mown grass.

My South was the South of The Partridge Family, Hawaii 5-0 and kick the can.

My South was creek swimming, cane-pole fishing and bird hunting.

In my South football is king, and the Southeastern Conference is the kingdom.

My South is home to the most beautiful women on the planet.

In my South soul food and country cooking are the same thing.

My South is full of fig preserves, cornbread, butter beans, fried chicken, grits and catfish.

In my South we eat foie gras, caviar and truffles.

In my South our transistor radios introduced us to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones at the same time they were introduced to the rest of the country.

In my South grandmothers cook a big lunch every Sunday.

In my South family matters, deeply.

My South is boiled shrimp, blackberry cobbler, peach ice cream, banana pudding and oatmeal cream pies.

In my South people put peanuts in bottles of Coca Cola and hot sauce on almost everything.

In my South the tea is iced, and almost as sweet as the women.

      My South has air-conditioning.

My South is camellias, azaleas, wisteria and hydrangeas.

      My South is humid.

In my South the only person who has to sit on the back of the bus is the last person who got on the bus.

In my South people still say “yes, ma’am,” “no, ma’am,” “please” and “thank you.”

In my South we all wear shoes . . . most of the time.

My South is the best-kept secret in the country. Please continue to keep the secret… it keeps the idiots away.

    Picking A Camera
    posted on Jul 22 2008

    coolpix

I’ve had a few folks email me over the past few weeks about camera recommendations. I’ spare the long-winded suggestions and give you the short-n-sweet version.

When it comes to top of the line camers (yes Sony and others produce high-qulity cameras) the top two players in the market are Cannon and Nikon. Both produce quality products and both have comperable models. Talk to any professional and they will recommend either, though they will swear by one. They will usually swear by the one they started with (ie - the one most accustomed to).

I swear by Nikon… my first great camera experience.

  • Nikon DSLR - These digital cameras are for those who are on their way to (or have serious interest in experiencing) serious photography. I own the D80 and love it, though the D40 is the best entry level for you (and your wallet). D60 is the newest addition and should be considered the most affordable cuttign-edge intro camera on the market. Those prices on the website are for the camera body only… look for a ‘bundled package’ which includes a decent lens. I don’t suggest buying used lenses or cameras on eBay — lots of reasons… just trust me.
  • Nikon Coolpix - Slim, easily portable cameras with great video and tremendous photo quality. 90% of the you should own one of these cameras (I’m about to buy one as a back-up for sporting events/concerts). I recommend the S52c or the S52. All of my pics from Europe were on a slim Coolpix.
  • It’s pretty simple… pick one and I promise (promise) you will never regret it.
