The Size of Our World
posted on Jan 31 2009

This remains one of my favorite links of all the interweb.

It bother’s me when fellow Christians say “Just look at the world around us… how can you not believe in God?!” While a agree with them in some respect, “amazing” does not prove the existence of God. Even the Devil aids in things that are “amazing” with regard to their impact on society.

However, looking at the size of Earth, compared to that of the Sun, then comprehending that there are other suns, planets, and galaxies far bigger than the ones we currently know about… it’s hard to look at our world, much less our universe, as an “accident”. Even Richard Dawkins, the grumpy atheist who refuses to debate Christians because doing so would give them the “oxygen of respectability” they crave, still acknoledges that there are almost certainly no gods.

To me, this is the first step (for many) to believing in God – being in awe of the world around you. Someone… some thing… some god had a plan. Your first thoughts might not necessarily shift to ‘Yahweh’, the God of the Bible, but rather the quest to find out what might be out there begins. I firmly believe this experience is one way God (Yahweh) communicates to many, long before they come to know Jesus.

Anyhow… that Antares thing is f-ing huge.

(Yes, I know Pluto is in that picture. Give the poor guy a break.)

Ghost TV
posted on Jan 30 2009

One of our cheap thrills in life (though, truthfully, our favorite couch time) is spent watching guys with night-vision cameras stroll through haunted locations at all hours of the night.

A list of our favs…

Ghost HuntersSciFi on Wednesday nights – Far and away the best ghost show on television. Seasons 1 and 2 are good; each season after is awesome. The new season starts March 11.

Ghost AdventuresTravel Channel on Friday nights – Thoroughly entertaining, if only for the Zak (the fearless leader) who speaks slowly, stammers, and overreacts to every movement, sound, or sight.

Ghost Hunters International SciFi on Wednesday night – Not as good as it’s cousin, though the finds can be just as entertaining.

Tired of Obama posts yet? Yeah, me too. I simply thought this was too poetic to avoid sharing.

Barack Obama

Beyond a few token acts of bipartisan marketing, Barry’s major duty in the Senate was to avoid legislating, so he could pretend Washington-outsider status and nullify attacks on his non-existent policy positions. That’s the thing about Obama and his candidacy: He was a blank slate, the pinnacle of vapid public relations—onto which the benighted masses may project their sincerest, yet unfounded, hopes in the wake of the worst administration in history. Couldn’t disown Rev. Wright, until he suddenly could, and then marred his first moments as president ahead of time by inviting a pastor whose advice to gays is just to refrain from sex for life. Promised not to run for president, then did; vowed to take public election funds, then didn’t; backed telecom immunity, then accepted the nomination at the AT&T sponsored convention; expressed displeasure with Clinton’s hawkish foreign policy and vote for war in Iraq, then named her as Secretary of State. And despite all that, he’s plenty affable. There’s nothing more loathsome than a likable politician.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.”

The Chick-fil-A Was Closed

Long story short (for anyone who doesn’t know and slightly cares):

I love Chick-fil-A at a level most would deem unhealthy. The closest Chick-fil-A to Seattle is 612.54 miles away — that was, until Chick-fil-A opened up a Chick-fil-A Express on the campus of Western Washington University, just 2 hours north of Seattle.

We decided to take a day trip to Canada last weekend, planning to swing by Western Washington University (WWU) en route to Vancouver.

Picture the sad person I am: staring at the GPS all along the way… 95 miles to WWU… 36 miles to WWU… 1.5 miles to WWU. It was like I was a 4-year-old child on Christmas Eve.

Martin Luther King had a dream. A dream that one day all races would be equal.

Well, Dr. King… I too had a dream. A dream that I would eat Chick-fil-A for the first time in 1 month. A dream that a Chick-fil-A in the state of Washington might just be more than a dream… an actual reality. That dream was squashed as WWU decided to close their Student Union over the weekend which coincided with MLK Day.

(To answer your question: Wendy’s chili… that’s what we ended up having for lunch. Wonderful… but not Chick-fil-A.)

Heck, George W. Bush wouldn’t get caught saying stuff like this with regard to the stimulus plan.

If we don’t get this done we (the Democrats) could lose seats and I could lose re-election.

Distribution of this film is still somewhat limited, even in artsy-fartsy Seattle. We packed into the 3-screen, Majestic Bay Theatre on Saturday. Everyone just sat there at the end of the movie.

The lights came on.
The credits began to role.
No one moved.

Our love for Stumptown Coffee in Seattle and Portland has been made known many times on the blog, though the best coffee joint on the West Coast never ceases to impress me.

1/2 lb bags of high-end coffee for $65, $85, and $95. Who says we’re in a recession?
