TV Suggestions
posted on Mar 30 2009

After requesting suggestions last fall, Damages and Friday Night Lights were given to us by my mom and dad at Christmas, and we’ve become highly addicted to both.

Recently started watching…

    Damages (thanks Karen!)
Friday Night Lights (thanks Ernest, Karen, John, Brooke)

Have the craving to begin…

True Blood (suggested by brother Aaron)
Weeds (suggested by many - loved by Paige)
    Dexter
    Six Feet Under

Suggestions? Thoughts? Do we need to avoid/add-to anything on this list?

Soccer Has A Hold On Us

The Seattle Sounders FC sold-out their second home game, Saturday. They also won their second game, which was their second shutout.

…what’s happening to us?

Chelsea and I even rushed home Saturday night after our movie to catch the second half on TV.

What made our first experience so much fun was at atmosphere that rivaled that of a European match. [Note: See video clips of my first European match here and here -- flares and M80s included.] That feeling is being echoed by visiting teams as well.

“We’ve talked about this place becoming a fortress for us,” said coach Sigi Schmid, who clearly sees a 12th-man advantage on a par with their bigger house brethren, the Seahawks. During the pregame, he greeted Salt Lake’s coach, Jason Kreis, and asked a question:

“What do you think of the atmosphere?”

He quoted Kreis: “Unbelievable.”

  • Authentic BBQ at Dixie’s, complete with sweet tea. The line can usually be up to one hour long… we lucked out, barely beating the crowd. Included in that crowd was a woman who used to live in Cullman, AL whose father used to work at the Daily Mountain Eagle in Jasper.
  • Taxes! Thanks for helping us get some cash, H&R Block (and for killing half of my Saturday afternoon.)
  • Saturday night movie and drinks at The Big Picture in TempurPedic theater seats white cheddar Champagne popcorn (whatever that means).
  • Sounders get their second win, second shut out, second sellout.
  • Late night Dick’s.
  • Sunday afternoon was spent in Top Pot, where I just happened to sit down beside two people on blind date. They had nothing in common. He was into her, and she wasn’t into him. It did not go well. I pretended to be reading the entire time in order to enjoy the most awkward of conversations I’ll hear this week.

If it seems a bit slow around her this week… it is. Aaron came into town ergo we’re running around doing fun things ergo I’m taking off a day of work to do said fun things ergo I’m trying to squeeze 40 hours of work into 4 business days rather than 5 ergo I’m tired…

Luckily, Obama held another press conference and it put me right to sleep.

I’m on a waffle kick lately. I prefer Eggos… Homestyle, with a moderate side of syrup.

    Breakfast? Lunch? Dinner? Waffles.
Chelsea’s offering to steam some vegetables? Waffles.
Leftover pizza from the night before? Waffles.

Anybody else on a ‘kick’ lately?

Stimulus? U.S. to buy Chinese condoms, ending 300 Alabama jobs. Barack rhymes with something… but this is a family blog, and, well I just can’t type that.

That’s the dilemma for the folks at the U.S. Agency for International Development, which has distributed an estimated 10 billion U.S.-made AIDS-preventing condoms in poor countries around the world.

    But not anymore.

In a move expected to cost 300 American jobs, the government is switching to cheaper off-shore condoms, including some made in China.

  • We finished Friday Night Lights, Season 1. I’m convinced that it’s the single best season of television ever produced. Ever. Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose!
  • Pancake breakfast (blueberry & buckwheat pancakes w/bacon and o.j.) on Saturday morning… still the best pancakes I’ve ever had.
  • Saturday afternoon, book browsing buying at Elliot Bay Books.
  • After Thursday’s game, I’m a fan. With very little prodding from the wife, I bought my scarf and hat.
  • I Love You, Man was quite entertaining.
  • Mexican food with a sunset view, Saturday night.
  • A new coffee shop, Sunday afternoon.
  • An edge-of-your-seat, heated sermon of Men & Marriage at church.
