The day finally came. After being wooed by the trailer before The Dark Knight, this movie has been the only 2009 flick I’ve looked forward to over the last 6 months.
I’ve never read the graphic novel, though I did know most of the back story. It was a combination of great expectations without truly knowing what to expect at all.
In a nutshell: Good. Not excellent. I’ll see it again while it’s in the theater, and I’ll most definitely buy the DVD.
What You Need To Know If You Haven’t Seen It
- It’s long. 2 hours and 43 minutes long. Pee pre movie.
There’s nekid people.
There’s a little lots of blood.
There’s great fight scenes… incredible costumes… beautiful sets… and enough ideas for Halloween 2009 costumes to make your head spin. (Oh… you thought you were going to be the only Rorshach this Halloween? You and every other co-worker.)
Why I Liked It
- It was gritty. Authentic 1980′s New York City. “Dirty” in the way the new Batman movies are, and in the way the former Batman movies weren’t.
It was un-comic-book-ish. The heroes aren’t SUPERheroes. They have struggles, weaknesses, tendencies like the rest of us.
It’s a story about good and evil, but not necessarily good vs. evil… but rather, what/who truly defines “good” and “evil”.
Religious Overtones
I guess one could look for religious overtones in any movie (especially us Christians) but the scriptural references were many:
- Even the heroes, those who have been given what the world deems as aspects of true happiness and fulfillment, still struggle with their own temptations.
- The greatest of the all gave up his life on earth so that others could have peace, and protection from otherwise impending evil.
- Out of sinful circumstance God can still produce good .
- The heart of man is inherently evil, albeit, at times, with the best of intentions.
Am I Going To Read The Comic Book?
Absolutely. I can’t read in English, so anything with pictures is helpful… seriously though, I’m buying it this weekend.
