Oh, You’re Never Going To Hear The End Of This
posted on Aug 31 2009

Guess whose indoor soccer team is playing in the championship game, Thursday? Do you hear the sound of my head expanding?

The soccer stats for the season are above. We’re ‘Micheal’s Team’. It was originally a place holder while we picked a team name, but then we won 2 games straight and kept it for good luck.

The stats are a little confusing if you don’t keep up with soccer, so I’ll simplify: we had the same record as another team, scored the same amount of goals, but we gave up less goals than they did.

Therefore, we’re in. Because we didn’t give up as many goals. I’m not going to remind you who our goalie is… but his name is me… me being L-dogg… Landon. (Sorry about that whole “L-dogg” thing).

Again. Head swelling.

PS - Chelsea took videos and photos last week, but the photos were blurry… and I got scored on almost every time she took a video. More to come…

[How did we find our way to the 150-selection Super Buffet, again?]

I was reminded of the scene from Old School over the weekend as we looked for potential apartments within Seattle. It’s amazing how such little townhouse-hunting can wear a man out.

  • Friday frites, baguettes, and wine at Cafe Presse.
  • Espresso shots at Stumptown.
  • Finished season 1 of The Wire. Stared season 2.
  • Pork tacos and chips n salsa at Cactus.
  • Sunday walk along SAM Sculpture Park and Elliott Bay.
  • Trying to find what to buy with our $50 Crate & Barrel gift card. Unfortunately, at Crate & Barrel… $50 will buy a couple of nice towels; not the reading chair I found.

    Coach

Excellent article from last weeks’ Daily Mountain Eagle on Principal ‘Coach’ Danny Gambrell.

Pam Brown, an English and drama teacher at WHS, recalls that Gambrell was always a good listener, especially to his students.

“We were always amazed how he knew everything that was going on with the students,”

My favorite memory of Coach is from my Senior year of high school. I was speeding driving in the rain, already late for class, when I came to a stop sign and bumped the car in front of me. With no damage to either car or driver, I continued to school, pulling into the parking lot just 3 minutes later.

As I was walking to homeroom, Coach stepped out of his office and into my path, crossed his arms, grinned and said, “Glad to hear that you and the other driver are okay.”

I stood completely still… perplexed… forever convinced that Danny had some sort of psychic ability.

Al Green is in town tonight (actually he’s at the casino, next to the world’s best outlet mall) and we can’t see him because I became obsessed with an indoor sport that doesn’t allow you to use your hands.

To cope, I thought I’d share one of my favorite Al Green songs… Back Up The Train.

Orrin Hatch’s Statement on Senator Kennedy
    posted on Aug 26 2009

Gotta love that one of the most conservative members of Senate was best friends with one of the most liberal:

“Today America lost a great elder statesman, a committed public servant, and leader of the Senate. And today I lost a treasured friend.

“Ted Kennedy was an iconic, larger than life United States Senator whose influence cannot be overstated. Many have come before, and many will come after, but Ted Kennedy’s name will always be remembered as someone who lived and breathed the United States Senate and the work completed within its chamber.

“When I first came to the United States Senate I was filled with conservative fire in my belly and an itch to take on any and everyone who stood in my way, including Ted Kennedy. As I began working within the confines of my office I soon found out that while we almost always disagreed on most issues, once in a while we could actually get together and find the common ground, which is essential in passing legislation.

“For almost two decades we alternated as Chairman and Ranking Members of the Senate Labor Committee, now called the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee. During this time we were able to come together in a bipartisan fashion to craft some of this nation’s most important health legislation.

“In the current climate of today’s United States Senate it is rare to find opportunities where both sides can come together and work in the middle to craft a solution for our country’s problems. Ted Kennedy, with all of his ideological verbosity and idealism was a rare person who at times could put aside differences and look for common solutions. Not many ever got to see that side of him, but as peers and colleagues we were able to share some of those moments.

“Elaine and I express our deepest condolences to Ted’s beloved wife Vickie, and their extended family,” Hatch added.

“I am hopeful that they will find peace and comfort in the memories and life they were able to share with this giant of a man.”

    We’ve Become Coffee Snobs
    posted on Aug 25 2009

We’ve known it for a while now. Joked about it. Mentioned it as we sit in the Starbucks drive-thru in small town Washington (because we can’t find any local espresso stands). Now… we need to come right out and say it. We’re pretty stuffy about coffee. (And we like soccer. What’s happening to us?)

People told me this would happened when we moved to Seattle. I laugh, and merrily skipped down the sidewalk to Starbucks. But it’s happened, and I know that you couldn’t care less… unless it once happened to you as well. I wouldn’t trade the best cup of Starbucks for the worst cup from one of the following. I highly recommend when you’re in the area.

    MC, Good To Go

Mississippi College isn’t participating in the recession:

There are many reasons for MC leaders to be upbeat in 2009. While colleges in California and other many other states are experiencing layoffs and slashing salaries due to the bad economy, MC is adding faculty and staff this fall, Royce said. There are ten new faculty on the MC campus and a significant number of new staffers. MC may equal or surpass its record of nearly 4,900 students last fall, school officials predict.
