Happy Halloween from Ralphie & The Leg Lamp

Ever since we started gong out on Halloween in Seattle we’ve always made an effort to “match”.

Our first three years we were TV characters, usually from whatever show had become our favorite in the months leading to Halloween.

This year we talked about mixing it up, and during a discussion of our favorite time of the year (hellooooooo) A Christmas Story came up.

Like many of you, A Christmas Story is my favorite Christmas movie of all time. Being Ralphie in his bunny suit and dressing Chelsea up as the “Major Award” leg lamp seemed logical (video).

By the way, that’s an actual lamp shade with actual working lights inside. Kudos, wifey.

2009: Eric & Tami Taylor, Friday Night Lights

2008: Joan Holloway and Don Draper Pete Campbell, Mad Men

2007: Jim and Pam, The Office

Seriously, I’m ready for Christmas. Seriously.

So there’s this thing in Alabama called Thursday Night Lights. I never knew about it until last week. Each Thursday during high school football season, the local My-whatever channel broadcasts a game.

    It’s awesome.

The week I was home was Walker vs. Curry. Yes, the greatest rivalry in Walker County was broadcast through the majority of the greatest state in America on the only weekend I’ve been home this year.

Walker won… very easily, mind you. If you don’t want to read the article, the image above and video below pretty much sum up the game.

    There’s highlights, too.

I decided to do a little tabulating last night. Come to find out that the photo I’ve sold more of than any other is one of the more common photos that anyone could take. Mind The Gap I snapped in 2008 when Chelsea and I went to London for New Years.

Don’t misunderstand. I like the photo. Most who’ve traveled to London get a smile on their face when they see the famous phrase. But there are other, more unique shots that never get snagged.

The Hollywood photo is one of my more favorite photos, yet not one copy has ever sold. I love the photo. No artsy analysis needed.

In Seattle, only one day in September had temperatures above 80 degrees. Needless to say it was a bit of a shock to land in Birmingham, but a pleasant visit nonetheless. The nights were chilly and ideal for football.

  • Dinner with John, Matt, and Andy in Five Points on Friday.
  • I dug through old boxes which Aaron and I used to keep our childhood knickknacks (it’s weird to see that word spelled out). How my. Some goods that will require their own post.
  • Walker vs. Curry on television? Incredible. Amazing. Yes, please. Broadcast to the Birmingham metropolitan area no less.
  • Pumpkin carving. It went on, but don’t look to me for results I can claim.
  • A full day of watching football with the family. How bout that Cam Newton?
  • Completely unnecessary late night trip to Walmart. Worth every second.
  • Church at Dawson Memorial Baptist of Sunday.

Yeah. I don’t quite know how to feel about this Megan thing either. As I tweeted post-episode Sunday night, I expected the proposal to be revealed as a dream sequence. Truth be told, as much as I’m intrigued by the ending, I’m fairly frustrated as well.

But then again, it wouldn’t be Mad Men if it didn’t end both thoroughly confusing and/or frustrating.

This insight from Gawker does a simple job of explaining what season four was all about:

The arc of this season seemed to be the integration of Don Draper and his assumed persona with Dick Whitman, the man who he is on the inside. Part of that was getting close to Dr. Faye, a woman who seemed to be an amalgamation of the two types of women Don needs in his life—blond bimbos to have sex with, and smart women to confide in and be friends with. This was cemented when, in a fit of panic, Don confessed the secret of his past to Dr. Faye, or at least part of his secret. Once she knew the truth and still accepted Don, we hoped that his transformation from the booze-soaked bachelor at the beginning of the season to a level-headed and successful ad executive was complete. If he could love Dr. Faye, he could be a complete person and no longer have to live the duality of his personality.
