Conversation Of The Week
posted on Mar 27 2006

The following conversation took place between a United States Passport Stamper and myself at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Thursday.

No, he was not a customs agent. Customs agents check bags and ask you questions that make you feel as though you are not worthy enough to enter a country.

This guy, however, just stamped passports.

Passport Stamper: So you’re just travelling after finishing graduate school?
    Landon: Yep.
Passport Stamper: Leave the Ivory Tower.
    Landon: I’m sorry? [confused look]
    Passport Stamper: The Ivory Tower…
Landon: Yeah. I actually have no idea what that means.
Passport Stamper: College is referred to as the ‘Ivory Tower.’
Landon: [Jokingly] Shows you how much I learned in college, eh?
Passport Stamper: [Gives me a "you're an idiot" look... turns his head to look in the opposite direction.]

Maybe I should have asked him what college taught him how to stamp passports for 40 hours a week.

‘Puter Problems
posted on Mar 27 2006

I was home very little over the weekend, so I didn’t have much time to create any Eurosix posts.

On top of that, I’m having some problems with my laptop.

On top of that, I’ve got a friend in town today.

So… the photos/videos will be a couple of days.

Sorry.

Tid-Bits From the Last Day in Europe
posted on Mar 23 2006

So, I’m on a plane right now, but I’m not live-blogging or anything. Just an automatic post created last night.

Expect a post from my Treo sometime today when I use my cellphone for the first time in 37 days.

Some thoughts…

  • Saw ‘Stomp’ last night. Although I’ve performed a number of routines from this Broadway/West End wonder, this is the first time I’ve seen it. Oh. My. Gosh. Incredible… but like Blue Man Group and Les Miserables, you can’t compare the three together.
  • Please pray that I don’t get stuck by another moron on the plane to Chicago. And also pray that the food is not made of fake meat. And also pray that homeless kittens would find a warm home, with warm hearts, and warm milk.
  • I bumped into some kids last night at ‘Stomp’ from Montgomery, Alabama. Interestingly…. or, uninterestingly, the conversation started when a girl saw my jacket and said, “Thank God somebody else is wearing a North Face jacket.”

I really had no idea how to respond to that, and too many jokes ran through my head. So, I quickly shifted the focus to our complimentary accents.

  • Jasper boys. Don’t forget, we’re headed to Perico’s tomorrow where I will order a Chicken Quesadilla with Spanish Rice and Pepsi… with all the free re-fills I want!
  • Pink! has already recieved an “award.”
  • I’ve never been so excited to get to the gym. I lost 1 belt notch on this trip, but don’t look any skinnier in the mirror, but my muscles are still unbelievably huge… seriously folks, it’s not even funny. (Sorry)
  • Have you ever been sitting beside someone whose breath is so bad that they are speaking in the opposite direction from your nose and you can still smell it?

  • Last Day
    posted on Mar 22 2006

Since tomorrow is nothing but in-flight movies (I had Walk The Line and Cat In The Hat 3 times on the way over), dinner in Chicago O’Hare, and getting back on Jasper time… today is technically the last day of Eurosix.

Folks, let me say… it’s been fun. I have absolutely loved having you all read along, send Facebook messages, and private emails along the way to keep me semi-updated on all the good gossip.

I’m so glad I could help to entertain, or simply help you waste the day away at work.

However, Santa’s still got some toys in his big fat sack (again… get your mind out of the gutter).

You didn’t think I would show and tell you everything that has happened since I’ve been gone? Surely you know me better than that.

I promise no to drag this out too much, but I gots to tell you all the stuff I haven’t told you yet!

When I get back (March 23), I’ll take a couple of days to travel-detox, eat Chick-fil-A ice cream (Ice Dream), and lounge with friends. But then, get ready for 2 weeks of the following:

    Video Clips

I’ve a handful of clips taken with my digital camera. Some are inspiring, some are intersting, and some are an attempt to be funny.

    Funny Stories

Stuff that will require it’s own article, and not a 12 word tid-bit.

    Odd Stories

Just what this implies. A couple of moments and nights where things got interesting. Nothing crazy or stupid… just interesting. That’s all I’ll say.

    More Photos

It takes a while to short through the photos… much less upload them. I’ve got about 100+ I haven’t released yet. I’ll release them, city-by-city.

    Things You Should Know

I’ve made a list of things people didn’t tell me before I headed off to Europe. If my trip has inspired you to do so, maybe these will help.

Day 1 of ‘Back in London’ Wrap-Up
    posted on Mar 21 2006
  • Took some notes from Mississippi State grad Avery Carlisle [facebook] and headed to Camden Town, in particular Stables Market, where Miss Carlisle sent me to a store dedicated to glow-in-the-dark clothing accessories, workers with scary hair, and techno music… loud techno music. Quite entertaining, and not at all what I expected.

I also followed her advice and made my way over to Notting Hill, Portobello Road and Portobello Market where I visited a bakery which specializes in American cupcakes… tasty!

  • On my way from Camden Town to Notting Hill I so-touristly stopped off at Abbey Road where the famous Beattles cover was shot. I watched some punk kid almost get hit by a car twice as his mother failed to take the picture of him crossing the road. “Gah mom! How hard is to take a picture!?!” he yelled in a upper-class, yankee accent.

I laughed… espcially when I crossed the street in front of him… ruining one of his shots. Gah, mom!

  • I bought an old, wooden cricket bat at the famous antique store “Alice’s.” While the bat was being wrapped, I made the mistake of calling it a “stick”, to which the husband-n-wife owner freaked and insisted that I call it a bat.

Sorry. I was just happy to have already known what “cricket” actually was.

  • Went to see Les Miserbales tonight.

    Holy cow.

Seriously, the best stage show I’ve ever seen… maybe even better than Blue Man Group, but that’s like comparing apples and oranges, or the Mississippi State Bulldogs to football. [Landon starts a timer to see how long it is before and MSU fan mentions the #1 NCAA Baseball ranking.]

  • At Les Mis tonight, I sat next to a husband, wife, and daughter from Minnesota. After the intermission, the daughter (20-year-old college student) had to swap seats to sit beside me because she “couldn’t see the show” from her seat.

    Yeah. Right.

  • Also, I saw the funniest thing last night on the Tube. I have a video… I’ll show you later.

  • Headed to Les Mis
    posted on Mar 21 2006

Sometimes I feel like the only person on earth who hasn’t seen Les Miserables.

Ever since that Dawson’s Creek episode when Joey enters the beauty pageant and sings “On My Own” to Dawson… I’ve wanted to see Les Mis.

I know I’m gonna get some nice feedback for that last remark.

Anyhow, I’m headed to Queens Theatre tonight for the show, which will hopefully live up to the hype that many people (including some of my readers) have shared.

If it doesn’t… you all owe me £20.00.

PS – You can watch the video clip from ‘Beauty Contest.’ Click here and go to episode #111.

Highlights (Get It… HIGHlights) from Amsterdam
    posted on Mar 20 2006
  • Getting solicited for sex more times than I normally do in Jasper.
  • My two stoned roomates from England who kept having to “use the bathroom” every 10 minutes. Where they would then go in, smoke up, and then ask… “Landon… it doesn’t smell like weed in here, does it?”
  • My O.C.D. roomate from Argentina (I’m not joking… he really was O.C.D. My roomate from Portland and I timed him when he performed certain tasks.) who took 14 minutes to brush his teeth, took 35 minutes to take a shower, and unloaded and completely repacked his entire backpack each night before he went to bed.
  • Really good Chinese and Thai food. Which makes sense, seeing as almost everyone has the munchies.

  • Back In London
    posted on Mar 20 2006

Oh, the relief of not being cold.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still pretty chilly here, but at least there’s not snow or ice on the ground. (I never thought I would hear myself say that).

And yes, just like Paige-poo stated, has it really been 6 weeks? Actually, I left 5 weeks ago today. Plus, my first trip was supposed to be a full 6 weeks, but when I rescheduled, the second trip measured only 5 weeks and 3 days.

But still, has it really been that long? Geez. I’ve got a nice analogy I’ll share with you later. But you guys have got to get me caught-up on all that is pop culture. Is Kristin from Laguna Beach really dating Nick Lachey?

These are the type of questions I need answered folks. Serious stuff.

Also, Ernest… you were right. I had Wagamama tonight. Ooooooh boy, was it good! Breaded ‘n baked chicken served over rice with curry sauce, and some edamame for a side dish.

    Dang.

Anyways… for all those who know London’s layout, I’m over at the intersection of Tottenham Court and New Oxford at an easyInternetcafe. It’s about time to head-out and do some classic “Landon wandering.” And praise Jesus… I have no ice to worry about slipping on.

    Talk to ya’ll tomorrow.

    PINK!
    posted on Mar 20 2006

This is (for now) just one of my pictures from Berlin.

    It’s my fav.

The story behind this sucker as follows: It is the underbelly of the roof of the Sony Center in Postdamer Platz (my favorite local in Berlin).

At night time, it begins to change colors… but I didn’t know when.

SO, I stood outside… in the cold… around 12 degrees… for 1 hour, just for this one shot.

However, if pink isn’t your color, you may also view it in blue.

    Back To London
    posted on Mar 20 2006

I will be in Londontown from today until my flight leaves at 12 noon on Tursday.

It will be nice to once again be surrounded by the English language… even if it is with a funny accent.

By the way. Bruges overtook Prague for the most amazing location visited on eurosix.

If you have not yet been, plan a trip.

    Simply amazing.

    Headed to Bruges, Belgium
    posted on Mar 19 2006

In my last stop before heading back to London, I’ll spend 24 hours in the land of chocolate while tucked away in the supposedly wonderful, quaint little city of Bruges, Belgium.

That’s all. Sunday is a fun day.

I Guess You Call This ‘Culture Shock’
    posted on Mar 17 2006

    Webster’s Dictionary defines shock as:

An over-response of the body that leads to extremely reduced blood pressure that can threaten essential bodily functions.
  • I was offered sex around 20+ times last night. However, I was very disappointed in myself as I could never quite come up with a funny reply to these requests.

Every time a prostitute offered, all I could get out was: “No thankyou.”

  • My 18-year-old roomate from Idaho is, as I type, in the room at our hostel rotating between a 36 ounce bottle of water and a 4-inch-long joint. I stumbled upon this site as I headed back to the room to drop my stuff.

“You want some?” he said as he coughed, over and over.

“No thanks, I’m full.” I replied.

    He didn’t get it. Stoner.

  • I rented a bike today. Pratically everyone in Amsterdam owns one, so I fit right in, and was actually asked for directions several times.

Picture me on a bike. Just that thought alone should make your Friday a little better.

However, while making my way to the Rembrant House, the pedal broke off. I was forced to “one leg” it back to the bike shop… 10 blocks away. The thought of me pedaling a bike with one foot should be better than the thought of me simply riding a bike.

They were more than happy to replace it, and said that no one had ever broken a pedal (AHHGGG! I AM SO STRONG!!!).

Of course, they then replaced it with a bike that was painted like a zebra.

  • You can’t help but laugh as you stroll throughout the streets of Amsterdam. Debauchery, filth, lust, and every other thing that follows sits before your very eyes. It just doesn’t seem real… and you just catch yourself laughing out loud.

It’s actually kinda sad. Amsterdam is an absolutely beautiful city. The canals rival that of Venice, and the buildings are as pretty as can be.

However, once again… all is overshadowed by the complete carelessness by which tourists conduct themselces here. Sad.

  • I’m out, kids. Have a good one. If all else fails, just be glad you won’t fall asleep to the aroma of Marijuana tonight.

    The Ginormous Hot Dog
    posted on Mar 16 2006

John Byars has been encouraging me to post on the food I’ve been eating while abroad.

I thought I’d kick things off with the hugest hot dog in the land. This big mama can be found on the main cobblestone shopping lane in Vienna, Austria. Keep in mind that I did not zoom-in for this shot. The people in the background are actually standing right being the hot dog.

Also… my hands are 4 feet wide.

Sooo good. They take a piece of toasted sub sandwich bread. Chop off the tip. Slip it over a heated metal “thingy” to hollow it out. Then pour some ketchup inside, and slide the huge dog right in.

All of you have very dirty minds. I just wanted you to know that.

In all seriousness, it is absolutlely delicious.

Snag one next time you’re in Austria.

    Photos from Prague
    posted on Mar 15 2006

Prague is the most beautiful city I have ever been to, hands down.

Granted, I’m not the “world traveller” as some of you are. But after 37 states and 10 countries… this city wins easily.

Ironically, it’s extremely hard to photograph.

Why? Because you just can’t fit it all into one shot… the streets, the buildings, the landscape.

    Too much.

    However, I tried.

    Photos from Prague.

    Photos from Rome
    posted on Mar 15 2006

Most of my photos from Rome are stored on my iPod… but I’ll dig ‘em up later.

Rome is amazing. History, literally around every corner. You can feel it in the air, and can touch it along the way.

Mass at St. Peter’s Bascilica, the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, and seeing the Pope himself kicked off the first 24 hours in Rome.

But there’s a whole lot more to Rome than old stuff and pointy-hats… I think.

Some favorite shots are hereherehere… and here.

    Photos from Rome.

    Photos from Vienna, Austria
    posted on Mar 15 2006

An unplanned location for my trip, but a pleasant surprise nontheless.

Vienna is a lovely town with old buildings, broad streets, and very efficient and clean public transportation system.

I got spoiled though, as it snowed 9 inches on the day of my arrival.

However, this made for some good photos. But snow, as beautiful as it appears, is so dang hard to photograph.

    Photos from Vienna, Austria.

    Photos from Venice
    posted on Mar 15 2006

A must-see on any European vacation.

Venice, Italy was, and is everything you think it will be.

You really do have to use boats to get to wherever you want to go. There are no cars, not even the smallest golf cart. Just sidewalks and canals.

Everything on the island is hand-trucked from one location to another. Therefore, everything is expensive.

    However, it’s worth every dime.

    Photos from Venice.

    Photo Day
    posted on Mar 15 2006

    Welcome to photo day…

This is kinda like in Elementary school when the teacher would show movies all day because he/she was in a good mood and the class was ahead of the lesson plan.

So… most, but not all of the photos from the last few locations will be posted every couple hours today.

    Enjoy.

    The Weather Was So Cold…
    posted on Mar 15 2006

    …how cold was it?

    It is this cold.

However, the temperatures here are slightly misleading. Remember… I’m walking through snow and ice, which makes my boots cold, which makes me cold. Also, half of the time I’m walking directly into the wind.

But, there’s plenty to see… so it’s all good.
