Questions & Answers Over the Last 10 Months
posted on Aug 25 2006

I’ve been all over during the last few weeks – hugging your necks and kissing your babies – and there have been a lot of questions asked.

Since they’ve almost all been the same ones, I thought I’d post the most frequent ones below.

So, here you go.

Question: Now that you’re moving, are you still gonna do the blog?

Answer: Are you kidding me? I’m starting a new life in the furthest, most beautiful, most polar opposite of Jasper in America. I have no plans of ditching this blog anytime soon.

Question: What have you done for money over the last 10 months?

Answer: There literaly hasn’t been one day (even Saturday & Sunday) since 1999 where I haven’t made money. I’m not even close to being rich… but I’ve always got a steady cash flow.

    Plan ahead, suckas.

Q: Why did you leave your job at MC in the first place?

Answer: I had other job offers, and it was time to move on.

Q: What happened to the “other job?”

Answer: I was in the midst of changing jobs when Hurricane Katrina hit. When Katrina came through it took away a lot of things… including the position(s) I was supposed to roll into. So, I was left jobless.

Q: Why didn’t you just get another job in Mississippi?

Answer: While that’s what I would have loved to do… I just didn’t feel like it was what I needed to do. I love the Hospitality State more than you’ll ever know. However, life is about making decisions that are correct, not comfortable.

I love Mississippi. I miss Mississippi.

Question: But you left Mississippi 10 months ago. Why did you wait so long to move on to something else, you lazy bum?

Answer: I was offered an interview for a PR firm in Birmingham while changing planes in Chicago on the way back from Europe. The offer for an interview was pretty much an on-the-spot offer to take the job. As much as I love the ‘Ham, now just isn’t the right time to move there.

I was asked to move to Boston 3 months ago but didn’t feel right about it even though it still is one of my favorite parts of the country.

I was asked to come to Seattle 3 months ago, but I would have had to fly back 4 times before September for weddings and meetings. Say… $5000 a flight… $50 each time for airport parking… taking off at least 5 vacation days within my first 3 months of work. So… yeah… not the smartest move to make at the moment.

Q: Do you get mad when we make fun of the fact that you’ve been living at home for the past 10 months?

Answer: No. Because I know that 99.999% of you mean it lovingly. Almost all of you have expressed interest in coming out ot Seattle over the next year and I know you’re excited for my big, risky move.

Question: What about the 0.001% of those who aren’t joking?

Answer: I peed in your cereal.

Question: If you had the last 10 months to do over again, would you do it the same way?

    Answer: Yes, and no.

Yes in the sense that I’ve been able to do a lot of things I’ve been wanting to do for years. I’ve also had quality time with the parents, and quality tiem with friends in the Birmingham area.

No in the sense that I wish I would have relaxed a bit more. I’ve literally spent day and night reading, writing and researching for business ventures… that’s just me, always thinking about tomorrow, rarely stopping to enjoy today.

Hindsight is always 20/20, and you can never anticipate a hurricane taking away your next job.

However, if things hadn’t gone wrong I would have never been able to go to Europe, or spend time with my parents, or have time to really reevaluate what direction I wanted my life to take.

Being 25-years-old, single, having another source of income, and being willing to subject yourself to lesser than normal conditions are neccesities to even think about pulling the stunt I have pulled over the last 10 months.

But I could do it… because I started working myself into this position years ago.

Setting-up Juicee News while people questioned sitting at a computer for 6 hours a day. Juicee News (along with other minor endavours) has been paying my bills, as well as my trip to Europe, for the past 10 months.

So… do I regret it? No. Because I planned ahead. I planned for the unexpected. I was flexible. And I never freaked out about “what will people think?”

I’m ready to move onto a new job — that’s for sure. Those of you who know me well know that I love business. Love it. We’ve got some things on the docket that we’ll beannouncing soon. Also, when I move and get everything set into place, I’ll be working on a couple of smaller projects that have a small chance of making it. It’ll be fun, whether or not big things happen from these small items.

Through it all you must remember and repeat two very simple but very important words: delayed gratification

You keep repeating that… everything else takes care of itself.

Let’s go to Seattle.

My First Odeo
posted on Jul 10 2006

I’ve added and tweaked some things on the sidebar –> over the last couple of weeks. One of those changes was adding a Send me an Odeolink where you can send me an audible message from your computer.

Yesterday I recieved an audio message (or “odeo”) from Pamla in England (yes… Pamla, not Pamela) who is doing some research and had some questions for me about an old article I ran on Juicee News. She had some problems emailing me and what able to tell me exactly what she needed with her cute and articulate British accent.

Gotta love new, fun technology.

Feel free to send me an Odeo anytime.

New Writer At JND
posted on Mar 14 2006

Juicee News, my flagship website, snagged a new writer over the past week.

Harvard Law School graduate, Walker High School alum, and Jasper lunch-buddy Drew Thornley will now be syndicating his posts from his own blog ‘My Take.’

Drew will likely be a syndicated political/religious columnist one day in many, many newspapers around the world. I am simply using my worldwide website to get the word out now.

If you are serious about writing, and would like to syndicate, or start your own columns, let me know, we may have a spot for you.

Looking For An Assistant Editor
posted on Jan 25 2006

I’m still in the process of working out some kinks at JND (hence, the low posts lately), but I’m already looking toward the future.

I’ll (hopefully

) be departing for Europe soon, and I need some help posting articles while I’m away.

If you’re interested in working with the best dang news blog on the net, holler.

The New Look
posted on Jan 11 2006

If you’ve payed any attention to JND over the last month-and-a-half… you’ve noticed a few changes. I think I’ve gotten rid of most of the bad.

However, today is one move that not even I (the over-obsessed, too-much-attention-to-detail owner) will regret… at least for now.

Juicee’s new logo:

Shall I break it down? I shall.

Colors: Orange & Gray
Font: Trebuchet MS
Design: Bamassippi Media Group
Background: I wanted to keep the orange/gray that has become a signature color scheme over the last 13 months. It was also necessary to keep the Juicee News Daily running together.

However, if I was going to do this and make Juicee News Daily all the same color, I needed to break it up in the mind of viewers. Hence, the “JND” prefix. The JND prefix exists in a ball. The ball symbolizes the world… which is the scope of news covered on JND.

Yes, I’ll still be tweaking things until I leave for Europe. That’s just how I am.

Problems. Problems. Problems.
posted on Jan 10 2006

Murphy’s Law is stated: “If there’s more than one way to do a job, and one of those ways will result in disaster, then somebody will do it that way.” or “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.”

Things around JND have been a little slow over the last couple of days. Long-story-short: My life is a little crazy right now.

Just days before I am scheduled to depart for Europe, things around here are a little nuts. Google News isn’t being too kind either… as they are having a case of amnesia, forgetting who I am and screwing up JND’s news feed.

My passport work was somehow 3 weeks behind, and I have yet to recieve it. Tomorrow should be the day.

My laptop won’t recognize my iPod, and my iPod won’t play music.

Anyway, just so you know.

Add USA Today to the List
posted on Jan 7 2006

Bamassippi flagship news site Juicee News Daily was mentioned via USA Today’s Sports section this past week.

The mention came during live coverage of the 2006 Rose Bowl.

Actually, it was the only story linked in the entire article. Just a link, but hey… it’s USA Today.

  • Best of 2005: Top 5 Juicee News Articles
    posted on Dec 28 2005

While many of these are not the biggest stories of 2005, they were the ones JND recieved the most exposure from.

1 – Ashlee Simpon Booed at the Orange Bowl – The halftime performance heard ’round the world. As the show ended, the boos started… so we wrote about it, and posted a video of the end of the performance as well. Two days later, more than 260,000 people visited JND just to take a peek at the video.

2 – Pictures of Carolina Panthers Cheerleaders Released – Somehow, someway I was able to get into the Carolina Panthers team website to snag these pictures and bios before the site was shutdown and the pics and bios removed. We all know the story, and I’ll be following this one until it dies.

3 – American Idol Contestant Withdraws From Competition – It is true. We were the first to report this story, beating E! and Variety by almost two hours.

4 – Britney Spears’ Wedding Photos Hit The Net – I won’t tell how we were the first to get ahold of these… but we were the first. Just ask Gawker.

5 – Coverage of Hurrican Katrina – This one speaks for itself. ventured out to take pictures of minor devastation while the Hurricane struck my portion of Mississippi. I camped-out in one of the only locations with electricity and Internet in Central or South Mississippi. I was also the first journalist to openly criticize Kanye West for his unwanted remarks during the Katrina Relief Show. In the days that followed, journalism took a backseat as I helped college evacuees find a home at Mississippi College.

Making Fun of Letters to Santa
    posted on Dec 23 2005

The 2005 Edition of Making Fun of Letters to Santa are here.

Sorry it took so long to get them released this year, things have been crazy ’round here. I just had a conversation with someone last night about how it never fails that Christmas always sneaks up on me.

    Enjoy.

A New Year. A New Look.

JND smallI told you I’ve been busy… now’s my chance to prove some of it.

It’s still in its testing phase… so I’ve got a little more work to do.

Take a peek at the new format of JND, come back here and lemme know what you think.

I know many of you won’t like it, but remember, you said the same thing when I changed the format one year ago.

It’s late, I’m tired, I’m trying to get unsick… so I’ll telly you more about it later.

    Letters to Santa
    posted on Dec 19 2005

JND will be releasing its annual ‘Letters to Santa‘ tomorrow.

For those of you not aware of this tradition… it’s pretty funny, and pretty wrong.

    - I print an original letter to Santa that I find on al.com.
    - I pretend to be Santa Claus, responding to the letter as if I were Santa. But please understand: The child never actually recieves the letter I send.
    - Oh, yeah. I might make fun of some people… but it’s all in good fun. Truth is, Christmas is my favorite time of year, and I am very jealous of these children who are building their Christmas memories right this very minute.

Here are some letters from years past: (Please note the vintage JND artwork and webpage design… ouch!)

    - Letters to Santa, Part One
    - Letters to Santa, Part Two
    - Letters to Santa, Part Three
    - Letters to Santa, Part Four
    - Letters to Santa, Part Five

    Best Month Ever (Almost)
    posted on Dec 1 2005

JND smallThis was one of the best months every for my spoiled-rotten news service Juicee News Daily.

  • 320,000 hits and 525,000 page views.
  • Advertising revenue up 60% from October, up 150% from September.
  • I say “spoiled-rotten” due to the fact that I’ve spent an average of 10 hours per day doing article research and closing advertisers for the site.

This month falls second only to January of this year… a month with 500,000 hits and 600,000 page views.

Look for a number of major changes at JND in the next few weeks.
