When I was a child I the three posters on my walls: Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan, and Ken Griffey Jr. You guessed it… I wanted to be an African American athlete when I grew up.
Spoiler Alert: I became neither African American nor an athlete, both of which I am saddened by.
Ken Griffey Jr. is by far my most favorite athlete ever, regardless of sport. Classy, honest, and perfect in his prime. The fact that I’ve lived in Seattle to seen him return with the Reds and come back to the Mariners makes me incredibly happy.

I know my odd Mariners love affair seems to have begun when I moved to Seattle. Truth is, I’ve been a Mariner fan for years. “Fan” may be an odd word. “Avid follower” might be more appropriate.
Stumbled across this SI cover of Jay Buhner & son last night. One of my favorites.
The fact that we’re 2-5 when we are supposed to be a contender this year isn’t even on my mind.
It’s Opening Day at Safeco Field. The food, the drinks, the crowd, the seagulls flying overhead, the wondering if the seagulls will poop on you. It’s baseball season once more.
I’m losing it.
The title alone gives me chills, and nearly brings a tear to my eye… I’m not joking. Watching this guy in-person is so exciting that you truly appreciate how lucky a team is to have someone like Ichiro.

Baseball season is nearly here: The Five Most Important Hits in Seattle Mariners History
Here’s a non-HD clip from my iPhone before Sunday’s game.
Griffey couldn’t have bee any classier before he took the stage. Signed autographs (amongst drunken, obnoxious, man-crushing Seahawks fans) for 20 minutes before raising the flag, then braved the masses en route to the stairwell, speaking to fans and signing caps and shirts all along the way.
This town will never have another Junior.

As a kid, the first poster I hung on my wall was of Ken Griffey Jr. with one of his signature home run swings. However, the greatest thing about his on-the-field accomplishments was the fact that he’s never really talked about them.
One of the best baseball players of all time is actually quite shy.
When he does retire, does he want a special day to celebrate or could he just disappear quietly?: “I don’t really think about those things. It’s one of those things that isn’t that important. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, I’m not the egomaniac that wants everybody to recognize me.
“Most of you guys know I hide out when things happen. If I do something, I’m trying to sneak by and get out of here. I’ve always been like that. It’s always more important for other people to talk about you than you talking about yourself. That’s how I grew up. The same model applies. If it’s important to talk about me, they will. If not, it really doesn’t matter.”
Mariners release their 2010 Schedule. We’re gonna win it next year… or the year after.
We flew-in recent signee Jack Wilson in on Wednesday. His quote about his first moment as a Mariner.
“I got here right as Griffey was hitting a two-run double down the line, so I was pretty pumped,” said Wilson, who watched the end of Seattle’s 3-2 victory over Toronto. “I was pretty excited to walk into that, put on the uniform, went in the bathroom and kind of looked at myself and was like, ‘All right, I’m a Mariner.’”
We’re not going to talk about the fact that the Mariners are 46-42, just 4 games back of the Angles (who SOMEhow swept a 4-game series against the Yankees).
We’re halfway through the season, and I’ve already started a “playoff ticket” fund.
…I just jinxed us.
