Vancouver is Manhattan with mountains.

During my years living in Seattle, Vancouver was my frequent escape destination for weekend getaways.

More recently, my employer set up an office right in the heart of Yaletown, Vancouver's buzzing hub.

I love the city. You will too.

 

Getting Around

SkyTrain: Your quickest friend from the airport to the city. Seriously, don't bother with a cab unless you've got too much luggage for public transit.

Walking/Biking: Vancouver is a walkable city, especially the downtown area. Trust me, sometimes it's faster to just walk or bike to your destination.

Mobi: This is a local bike share system, but it's more catered to locals due to its subscription-based pricing. Stick to rentals if you're a tourist.

 

Where to Stay

Yaletown: If you can, make it your base. Think breweries, bakeries, shops, and it's close to the False Creek walking path. Hotels? OPUS is your best bet.

Sylvia Hotel: If you're budget-conscious, go for this one. It's got a no-frills vibe, but it's near English Bay and Stanley Park. Plus, there's live music at the lobby bar.

 

Quick Escapes

Capilano River Regional Park: If you have a car or want a short trip out of town, go here. Don't miss the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park.

Sports

Whitecaps, Canucks, and Lions: Depending on your budget and interest, check out a game.

 

My Favorites

  • Brewery: Yaletown Brewing

  • Coffee: Small Victory, Pallet Coffee, Rocanini Coffee Roasters

  • Bakery: Small Victory, Angus T

  • Steak: The Keg, Joey

  • Pizza: Pizzeria Farina

  • Bar: The American (they have trivia nights and pinball machines!)

  • Breakfast: OEB Breakfast Co, Paul's Omelettery

  • Shopping: Robson Street

  • Sunset: English Bay Beach

 

Do Not Miss

  • Stanley Park: If you can, rent a bike. It's worth it. There's a great loop around the park.

  • Nine O'Clock Gun: It fires every night at 9 p.m. It still scares the bejeezus out of me, but it's a tradition.

  • Granville Island: Yes, it's touristy, but it's a must-visit. Think of it as Vancouver's answer to Seattle's Pike Place Market.

  • Aquabus: These small water taxis are a fun way to get around False Creek.

  • Olympic Cauldron: Located at Harbour Green Park. It's not a must-see, but if you're in the area, why not?
