2 travel things startups can do to cut burn

Every dollar saved cuts burn and extends the runway. Here are 2 changes I've seen startups make for business travel to save on costs...

πŸš™ Drop Uber. πŸš‡ Take the subway.

The Subway isn't an option for every business trip, but a Seattle founder I spoke with is saving $1,200/month just by asking his team to take the LightRail to and from the airport.

In a recent trip to Boston, Uber and Lyft were $40 from BOS to downtown. I took the Logan Express bus for free, and the trip only added an extra 15 minutes. BART is $7 from SFO to downtown SF. The Light Rail is $5 from SEA to downtown Seattle. The MARTA is $2.50 from ATL to any station in Atlanta.

If you're traveling in a group, an Uber or Lyft makes perfect sense, but otherwise, rideshares easily cost $100+ round trip to save 30 minutes. With multiple team members on the road, that adds up quickly.

🏠 Drop Airbnb. 🏨 Stay in a hotel.

There was a time when Airbnb was a much cheaper, much more fun option for business travel. That time has passed.

Due in large part to new Short-Term Rental Laws, there are fewer Airbnbs available, the costs higher, and there's a plague of exorbitant exorbitant cleaning fees despite hosts' requests that you "clean up well before leaving."

2 better options with great locations, clean facilities, and great prices...

  • citizenM hotels (~$100/night) is like an upscale micro-hotel + coworking + coffee shop + bar.

  • Staypineapple (~$100/night, but I've booked for $75/night), whose quirky themes arent my style, but the service is incredible, and they have a coffee shop + bar.
