The value of writing in lists

Lists provide value to both the writer and the reader, untangling and simplifying ideas.

After almost a decade of not writing on the Internet, I’m writing weekly on the Internet once again.

It’s intimidating.

There are so many great, proven authors, but there are still important niche topics that I believe I’m qualified to discuss.

Writing is one thing, but distribution is a whole different beast. The temptation to write a listicle is constant, which is why I found Dynomight’s ‘How I learned to stop worrying and structure all writing as a list’ to be incredibly insightful.

Unironically, and perhaps proving the point of the article, here are the highlights…

  1. Lists are appealing

  2. Lists promise value quickly

  3. Lists promise different types of value

  4. Lists promise limited complexity

  5. Lists promise many entrance points

  6. A list is a contract between the writer and reader

  7. A list promises “list-tractability”
